Music had always been a part of the Chakrborty family, living amongst my grandmothers and aunts who were musicians themselves, music played a big role growing up. Although it was only until that I was 15, when I picked up the piano and found my first influences in Yanni, AR Rahman, and Beethoven as composers, yet it was really the 90s Bollywood music that got me hooked. I remember listening to Rahman’s ‘Roja’ and I knew I had to reach Bombay and be a part of the industry.
Ever since I made the big move to Bombay, I have worked predominantly as a Music Composer/Arranger for various clients in the Bollywood industry and started teaching at Gujarat Research Society, Mumbai as well as Mumbai Music Institute. These were the platforms that help me discover my love for teaching and now I have made teaching music enthusiasts such as myself, a parallel career to venture in.
I remember the first time I had really heard an instrument being played live, I did not come from a musical background and this was a big deal! It was from my computer engineering days and a guitarist friend of mine started playing Limp Bizkit’s ‘Take a Look Around’, I caught the bug and convinced myself to get an acoustic guitar against all the countless arguments I had with my family members.
Being a computer geek came handy, I knew my way around the softwares and I was introduced to my college band and before we knew it, we were jamming, recording and producing at my home.
Atif Aslam, Silk Route, Jal being my primary influences, I kicked off my music career as a live Hindi rock act while also composing/producing music for advertisements, web series, documentaries and films.
I started my career in 1998 as a Studio Assistant under Neelesh Bhatia and Shantanu Hudlikar with Audiofile Studio, Pali Hill, Bandra which was owned by Filmmaker Rahul Rawail. Then moved to Western Outdoor Studio ‘A’ and worked under Daman Sood & Avinash Oak. After my stint there, I moved on to Postation, Pali Hill as a Recording and Mastering Engineer, where I worked with A. M. Padmanabhan, Vijay Benegal and Nikhil Shirodkar.
In 2003, I started off on my own as a Freelance Mastering and Post Engineer, where I have worked and have been working on numerous projects for EMI Music India, Warner Music, Universal Music Group, Ameen Sayani Productions, Strumm Entertainment and quite a few Music Directors and Producers till date.
In 2014, I started teaching as a visiting faculty with SeamEdu Media School, Pune and Bangalore where I also spent 18 months as Associate Head of Academics, Sound Engineering. I am now back to being a visiting faculty with them and now, also with Mumbai Music Institute.
